Striking Matches coverage from Cre8tive Reviews!

Cre8tive Reviews recently had the pleasure of working with Country Duo “Striking Matches,” when they stopped by Country Station KJUG to play a few songs for us. They are an amazing new duo who will no doubt make a BIG impression on country music.

With their T Bone Burnett-produced debut album, guitar-wielding duo Striking Matches creates an unexpected and unique sound that defies easy categorization. The music of Striking Matches—Sarah Zimmermann and Justin Davis–occupies that sweet spot at the intersection of country, rock and blues, where all of the elements blend to form an authentically raw and rootsy sound that has a timeless and international appeal.

Indeed, their songs including “When the Right One Comes Along” and “Hanging on a Lie” have been featured on ABC’s hit drama series Nashville and recorded by the show’s stars Sam Palladio and Clare Bowen, and attracted an international fan base. Their first performances in London produced sold-out shows and audiences with a deep knowledge of their lyrics, even before the release of their first full album. Their debut self-titled EP was named among iTunes “Best of 2012″ and received national attention from outlets such as NPR, the BBC and The Wall Street Journal.

“The Nashville TV show was definitely a big break for us,” Sarah says. “It was the first time we had any national or international attention. That opened the door to a lot of fans finding us here in the U.S., but even overseas when the show came out in the U.K.,” she says.

Striking Matches is the debut artist on the newly revived label, I.R.S. Nashville, and has toured with Train, Vince Gill, Ashley Monroe and Hunter Hayes.

“Our music is best left up to interpretation, but we hope it represents an amalgamation of everything that has influenced us over the course of our lives, which comes from rock and roll, country and blues, and we fall somewhere in between all of those,” Justin says.

Although their debut album is a perfect fit in the landscape of today’s commercial music, it also stands out from the rest of the pack with its driving rhythms and simple yet artful production that’s designed to showcase the compelling harmonies, honest lyrics and innovative guitar playing. They had a hand in writing all 11 songs on the album, which captures the high energy and spontaneity of their popular live shows.

Of course, that’s not surprising, given that both have built a musical foundation on guitar playing and gravitate toward guitar-driven music, such as The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Steely Dan, Patsy Cline, Jerry Reed and Chet Atkins. Justin is known for his fast, intricate playing, while Sarah was influenced by the blues guitarists who strive to make every note count and last. “I have always found Sarah’s guitar playing interesting because it seems to complement mine,” he says.

Both shared the same dream growing up, even though they came from different backgrounds and regions. Justin was raised in Atlanta by parents who work in the medical field. “While they didn’t play any music, they had really great taste in music and that helped set me on a path that I am forever grateful for,” says Justin, who was raised on music such as Sam Cooke, Petula Clark, Otis Redding, Ray Charles and Motown greats.

He began writing songs at age 10 and has been playing guitar as long as he can remember. But he looked like a late bloomer compared to Sarah, who was raised outside of Philadelphia and began playing clarinet in second grade, violin in third grade and guitar in fourth. Her father was a musician who repaired woodwinds and other instruments in a downstairs studio, so she was immersed in music and was influenced by the Dixie Chicks. “They proved to me that a girl can play just like a guy can play,” she says. “They were my inspiration for being a lead guitar player.”

Both decided to pursue their dreams of having a career in music by moving to Nashville. Their paths crossed when both decided to attend Belmont University in 2007 and major in guitar, so they attended the same guitar seminar class and were randomly paired together by their professor early in the semester.

“It was a room full of guys and we were saying, ‘Well, as long as we don’t get the girl, we’ll be all right,” Justin recalls. “They called my name and Sarah’s. I thought, ‘Great. It’s all over now.’ I said, ‘Do you know any blues?’ She pulled out her slide and proceeded to leave everyone’s jaw on the floor, including mine. It was one of those ‘we should do that again’ moments.”

And they did just that. They began performing songs by Nickel Creek, Alison Krauss and Keith Urban, which led to writing together, which resulted in their first public performances at places such as the Bluebird Cafe. While they continued to perform with others, they loved the music they made together most of all. “This was always where we were having the most fun,” he says. “It was the most fulfilling. It was a dynamic of complement that didn’t exist anywhere else.”

Sarah won a scholarship to take a songwriting course at Vanderbilt University, and one of the guest speakers was veteran music executive John Grady. “He sat down, looked at me and said, ‘I know you,’” Sarah says. “The day before, someone had shown him a video we put on YouTube and he liked it. We started talking and got back together the next day. I think it was fate.”

After discussions with several labels, they accepted the offer to be the first artists on I.R.S Nashville. “I don’t know that there is a cooler label that I would want to be a part of,” Justin says. “It has such a history and it feels right.”

The duo was also thrilled when they heard that famed producer T Bone Burnett, who produced their favorite Grammy-winning album Raising Sand by Alison Krauss and Robert Plant, wanted to work on their debut project. “The environment in the studio was all vibe,” Sarah says. “It was really relaxed. T Bone has a way of making you feel super important and everything you are doing is right, and if it is not, he will guide you to where it needs to be. He knows how to bring out the very best of us.”

The best includes songs such as “Hanging on a Lie,” which they reinterpret with grit, a distorted mandolin and a mid-song jam session, as well as the organic and honest “Nothing But the Silence,” the guitar-centered “Trouble Is As Trouble Does” and “Make a Liar Out of Me” and groove-oriented “Never Gonna Love Again.”

“We haven’t written our best song yet,” Justin says. “We are so proud and grateful for everything so far, especially this record, and the sky is the limit for us. Creatively, we started writing songs while we were in the studio and especially when we finished. There was no resting. We are still hungry.”

Adds Sarah, “We have more to say and we want to be heard.”

SM_9022_C8_Web

We definitely liked what we heard, and so did the fans. Tracking on iTunes even showed that in the UK they were #2 for preorders in download sales. They have a unique and great sound, chemistry and are a fresh group looking to take over the airwaves!

New Country Artist Spotlight – Sara Avalos

Sara Avalos (Credit: Sara Avalos Facebook Page)

Sara Avalos (Credit: Sara Avalos Facebook Page)

Sara Avalos, or “Little Bit” as her bandmates playfully refer to her by must only be about 5 feet tall, but her vocals are sky high.  She possesses a maturity to her tone that almost sounds a little like Bonnie Raitt, but unique at the same time. Her stage presence is bubby, her smile infectious, and the power behind her vocals substantial. There are so many artists out there who are great singers, but the ability to really feel the emotion or the words makes a big difference. Sara, has demonstrated her ability to do both.  So who is Sara Avalos?

We found some information on her Facebook page that gave us a better understanding of how she got in to music.

“It all started when I was 2 years old. I stayed with my Grandma a lot while my brother was in the hospital. She was a lead singer for The Sweet Addalines Texas Region for a long time. When I was 2 yrs. old my grandma would sing to me and I would sing the same note. When it came Christmas time in San Antonio where I was born, my family and I went to a mall for my cousin’s show. I ran up on stage and I grabbed the mic from the host and asked him to let me sing. I sang Twinkle Twinkle Little Star in the middle of the mall.

Then when I was about 6 I started acting in my church plays with my brother and having lead singing roles.

When I was about 9 I had recorded a demo and started touring Texas. It was a lot of fun!  I sang at so many Opry’s and events. In September of 2006, I went to Las Vegas for a competition.  My mom and I baked over 300 cakes and cookies to raise the money to get there. I was up against 3,000 kids and I lost by 1/2 a point! But that’s what got me here to Nashville and I’m very grateful for it.”

Sara has sang for Tootsies for two years, The World Famous Nashville Palace for four years and on Sunday nights with the Justin Myers band at The Second Fiddle.

The Swon Brothers didn’t need to wait until Later On to rock the Tulare Outlet Center

The Swon Brothers brought strong vocals, original songs, and energy to a large crowd that gathered, despite the heat at the Tulare Outlet Center. As if it couldn’t get any hotter, 106.7 KJUG FM hosted the concert and the guys rocked the crowd. They played some classic hits from their time on the tv show The Voice and their current single “Later On.” They also sang “Danny’s Song,” “Turn the Page”, “I can’t tell you why”, and “Drift Away.” Their vocals were strong, and the guys sounded confident, and even better than they did on The Voice. The guys had a great time sharing stories from their time on the show, and interacted with fans young and old.

The Swon Brothers (Zach and Colton) first hit the national radar charming fans with their incredible sibling harmonies and fun-loving personalities as finalists on Team Blake in Season 4 of NBC’s The Voice. Newly signed to the Arista Nashville record label, the brothers returned to The Voice in December of 2013 to perform “Later On,” the first taste of the Muskogee, OK, natives’ upcoming album, helmed by producer Mark Bright (Carrie Underwood, Sara Evans). The journey marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the history of the Swons, who had the ambition to take their first swing at a record deal when they were only 9 and 11 years old, asking their parents to stop in Nashville so they could audition at record labels on their way to a family vacation in Florida. Recently honored with the Rising Star award by the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame, The Swon Brothers are currently writing and securing songs for their major-label debut album, coming in 2014.

Scotty McCreery rocks Hanford for 106.7 KJUG’s Summer Concert Series!

106.7 KJUG kicked off their Summer Concert Series with the first of three free shows in Hanford Civic Park, in Hanford Ca.  American Idol winner  Scotty McCreery sang his heart out to the crowd.  His fans were very excited to come to the show from all over the state to Hanford Civic Park. Some fans even put their chairs out as early as 6am so they had the best seat in the house.
We got to meet up with Scotty before the show, and  talked about the experience he had on American Idol.  He said it was definitely an interesting start on Idol, and as the weeks went by he wanted to sing his style of music but Idol wasn’t sure if it was the right for the show. Well, we definitely think it was the right fit for Scotty and his fans from Idol agree and voted him all the way to the win!

We looked out to see all of his 8,000 fans that came to support his music. When he took the stage he did not disappoint them. He started rock’n some classic songs and then some from his current CD “See You Tonight” like “Carolina Eyes”, “The Dash”, “Forget To Forget You” and” Get Gone With Out You.”  These were some of the songs that were a great surprise and his fans enjoyed hearing.

Lindsay Ell and Leah Turner rock Exeter, CA for 106.7 KJUG’s Summer Concert Series

Whoever said that country music is dominated by men, must not have made it to see these ladies. Cre8tive Reviews caught the amazing shows of Lindsay Ell and Leah Turner at a recent summer concert series hosted by 106.7 KJUG. The concert was a free event, held in Exeter, California where they opened for Eric Paslay.
We started out with Lindsey Ell a guitar phenom. She started playing at the age of two.  She entertained the crowd with her amazing guitar playing and a great voice. “Don’t Take Me Home” & “Trippin On Us” where crowd favorites. Check out that purple guitar! To listen to Lindsay’s Music please visit her Official Website.

We were excited to see Leah Turner!  If you remember we spotlighted her earlier this year. We meet up with Leah and we were in for a great show. She started out singing “Make your move”, then followed with “Take the keys”, “Mamas Cowboys”, “Blessed”, “Sharp dressed man”, “Sticks and stones” her current single “Pull me back”, “Cowboy” and she ended up with “The Finger”. A very upbeat song about that one guy that you need to kick to the curb and give him that ring back from your finger. She joked maybe another finger too. Hmmm…I could think of a few people deserving of just such a thing.  To listen to Leah’s music please visit her Official Website.

Not that long ago, we stumbled upon an amazing country group, “Outshyne” via Pandora when we heard their single “Moonlight crush.”  The vocals are strong, the lyrics play out a scene in your head, and instantly you find yourself singing along even though you don’t know all the words yet. After playing it on repeat several times, we knew that we wanted to spotlight the band and find out more about them. We downloaded “Starting Over” and also their first CD “Country Boy in Me” and were not disappointed. Their mix of country and southern rock is perfect for todays country music explosion. But who are Outshyne?

Outshyne came together in April of 2007. The band consists of five members, who all went to high school together. They’ve all played in different groups consisting of mostly rock music. With such a strong influence in country and southern rock, they decided to come together and start a country band with a rockin’ edge.

Outshyne consists of :Waylon Owings-Lead Vocals/Acoustic, Josh Coleman-Lead Guitar/Vocals, Casey Joe-Rhythm Guitar/Vocals, Jason Paxton-Bass Guitar, Matthew “Smiley” Norris-Drums

The Team here at Cre8tive Reviews had a few more questions for the guys, and we were able to ask in our exclusive interview. Check out our interview below along with links to purchase and support Outshyne’s music.

1. What’s something unique about you that people would be surprised to know?

We all worked at Burger King together in high school and also all went to the same high school.

2. What is the first thing you are going to do when you win an award for your music?

Take a moment to give thanks to all that have helped us obtain out dreams.

3. Who would you most like to collaborate with on your next project?

There a lot of good artists out there we wouldn’t mind working with. We are all big Eric Church fans so he would probably be one we’d all enjoy.

4. Who are some of your musical influences that have inspired your career?

We have a very diverse influence from 80’s rock to metal to southern rock and country. As far as myself I really like Merle Haggard and Lynyrd Skynyrd. (Waylon)

5. If you could describe your concerts in one word what would that word be?

energetic

6. What do you feel sets you apart from other country artists on the radio today?

Our music kinda rides the fence between new rocking county and old country. We aren’t scared to play anything or try any song. We just love playing music.

7. How excited are you guys hearing your music on SiriusXMTheHighway Radio Hot 45 Countdown and every week it’s moving up? Congrats!

John Marks and everyone at the Highway has been so great to us. It has just moved up to number #8 which really blew all of our minds.

8. Did you guys play a showcase for a labels,  what are they looking for and how did you guys get signed with your current label Milllstar Music?

We met Millstar through a venue we were playing early in our career. They helped us sponsor Kenny Wallace’s Car in the Nascar Nationwide series and we have been partners ever since.

9. Do you guys like moonshine and Moonlight Crush who wrote it and
was it about someone’s first love first date first crush?

Moonlight Crush was actually pitched to us and written by Marv Green, Blake Wise and Rodney Clawson. And of course we like moonshine lol! We all actually loved the song soon as it was pitched to us.

10. Where did your name come from & what’s the meaning behind it?

We had a bunch of name in a hat. It was our first show and our bass player Jason said he wasn’t gonna play if we didn’t have a name. So we drew it out of the hat and that’s what we have become. We had other names like “camouflage double wide” lol

What a great interview with a great group of guys! We want to give a HUGE thanks to Outshyne for taking the time out of their busy schedules to interview with us! We also cant wait to see their single move up to #1, and know it’s just a matter of time.

Dustin Lynch rocks the Tin Roof Downtown San Diego – June 15th!

Dustin Lynch on stage at the Tin Roof San Diego

Dustin Lynch on stage at the Tin Roof San Diego

Father’s Day weekend just got a little sweeter when country superstar Dustin Lynch took the stage at The Tin Roof in downtown San Diego. This free show promised to be an amazing up close and personal event for fans, as they were able to stand front row at the stage and meet him after the show for autographs and photos. The show kicked off at 8:30, versus the advertised 8pm. The Tin Roof crowd energetically anticipated the concert, and even began chanting Dustins name. Once he took the stage, he didn’t disappoint and started off with his high energy song “Tractor.” The ladies in the front row could barely contain their excitement as he jumped onto the light boxes in the front corners of the stage, and moved his hips while he performed.

Dustin Lynch

Total Lynch sang 18 songs, some of which were his and some were from legends like Garth Brooks, Weezer, Travis Tritt, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and a few more. At one point in the show Lynch even commented how this particular show was going to be a little bit different and they would be singing it like their spring break shows. Complete with drinking games, and songs to encourage the ladies to shake it, and slowly at times, Dustin Lynch proved that he was able to keep the audience entertained and excited the entire time. During the drinking portion, he encouraged the crowd to raise their glasses, noticed the drinks everyone was holding up, gave a shout out to the awesome American Flag gloves koozies people wore, and then followed the song off with his famous bicep chug. He even called out a girl outside of the restaurant, behind the stage, to finish her drink and chanted “chug” repeatedly until she finished it with a big smile.

DL_5668_peWeb

Some of the highlights from the show included Dustin’s Garth Brooks tribute songs like “Rodeo” and “Friends in Low Places” which got the crowd singing along even louder than the band. Jello shots got passed around throughout the bar as waiters and waitresses circled the space making sure everyone had something to eat, or a drink in hand. I must say the wait staff was excellent! They even brought a large tray of shots onstage for Dustin to pass out to the crowd since it was his drummers birthday. He passed some gently to the front row and then tossed the jello shooters out to the crowd. Following this, he tossed out at least 20 shirts to his happy fans. Girls in the front row couldn’t pass up their chance at merchandise and some of them got a little over zealous and starting pushing each other. Security had to intervene a few times, and once even Dustin called them out by saying that there “isnt a first in line or a second in line, all of us are just here to have a good time so chill out.” The girls seemed to mellow down a little after that until it was time for him to sign autographs. At the end of the show, Dustin graciously stayed for about an hour on the stage taking selfies with, and signing autographs for everyone who waited at the stage. It was an amazing concert and a great way to spend a sunday evening.

Kim_5745_peWeb

The one piece of advice we would give to The Tin Roof San Diego is to have a little bit more of a security rope in place for the fans at the front of the stage. Although the ladies were somewhat respectful to Dustin, they seemed to instigate a little bit of rowdiness with each other to make sure they were the one he was singing “Cowboys and Angels” to. The other thing I would definitely change is to color EACH of the stairs to the different levels with the red paint. We were sober, and can’t tell you how many times we almost face planted it. I could see patrons stumbling terribly over the stairs. Other than that, the venue was intimate, yet spacious with great views and sound all around.

Thank you to Dustin Lynch and his rockin’ band, and The Tin Roof San Diego for an amazing show!

Cre8tive Reviews Interviews John King at JUGFEST 14! Audio

If you have been to our blog before, or visited our twitter, you have heard us mention an amazing new singer named John King. We first heard about John after the release of his EP, titled “Something in the water” from Black River Entertainment in 2013. Every song on this EP is well written, catchy and lyrically awesome. We have become supporters and fans from the start.

image

So, imagine our delight when we found out about Jugfest and saw that John King was going to be there. And just like we thought, the John King band didn’t disappoint. The crowd loved the entire set, and especially loved the catchy track “Huk’r Shoes” which King even warned the crowd was catchy and would stick in their heads all day. One of his fans on Facebook made that comment later that day when she posted online “Thank you, it was a great show. You were correct, Huk’r Shoes was stuck in our heads the rest of the night!”

John King Band at Jugfest 14

John King Band at Jugfest 14

Before his set, John King spent time meeting fans and signing autographs. Often, this part of a concert is what fans remember most. It’s always great to see the artists reach out to their fans and spend time chatting with them. Based on the feedback online from those fans, they not only enjoyed Johns personality but his performance as well.

John_King_4360_Web

John is currently promoting the single “Tonight Tonight,” a catchy soon to be hit that got the audience singing along. We can’t wait to hear this single climb the charts and for this hard-working singer from Georgia to get the accolades he deserves. His band members are equally as talented and the combination of their harmonies, vocals, energy and musical talent is a force to be reckoned with.

We had a chance to catch up with John King and ask him a few questions about the show.

Jugfest 2014 a Huge Success for 106.7 Kjug Radio!

Cre8tive Reviews along with over 18,000 country music fans spent last Saturday at an amazing concert! Jugfest 2014 was held Saturday May 31, 2014 at Plaza Park in Visalia. The gates opened at 1, and the show started at 3pm but loyal and excited fans waited in line starting at 10:30am for their chance to see five amazing acts.

image

John King Band, Jamie Lynn Spears, Collin Raye, Frankie Ballard and ACM New Artist Award Winner Justin Moore took to the stage for this FREE concert. The thing that we loved about this concert series in the park is the acoustic style of the performances. Most of the artists were able to showcase their singing talent without the large band behind them and the crowd loved it! Justin Moore was the last act of the night and he had his entire band with him along with his massive tour bus and multiple guitars.

We were privileged to capture photos of the event, and interview some of the singers before and after their set. One of our team members, Paul Breski, was the official photographer for the event – and quite a few of his photos have been featured on the Facebook pages of KJUG Radio, John King, Jamie Lynn Spears and Frankie Ballard.

Before John King started off the show he was out mingling with the fans and signing autographs, and posing for pictures. He performed songs from his new CD and the crowd really enjoyed his energy and vocals. One of the crowds favorites was “Huk’r Shoes” and his new single “Tonight Tonight.”

Jamie Lynn Spears was next and she did not disappoint the crowd! Her vocals were spot on, and hearing her acoustically proved she was for real. One fan even told us “They should not call her Britney’s sister, cause she can sing and hold her own as an amazing singer!”

Our buddy, Frankie Ballard started his set while sitting on bar stools, but that didn’t last long. His high energy show got himself, and the crowd up out of their chairs. His upbeat single “Helluvalife” got the crowd singing and he even found his way into the audience to sing with his fans. He even found a few kids to help him sing “Old Time Rock’n Roll” by Bob Seger on stage with him. He followed up that song with his new single “Sunshine and Whiskey.”
